Two points need to be made in response to Frances Hix (Letters, August 30).
Firstly, to be able to function in any meaningful manner, the mayor would need such powers he or she would necessarily be open to substantial abuse.
Otherwise there is no point in having a mayor.
Secondly, is the alternative council system put forward the best replacement for the existing system?
It would appear from her letter there is an opportunity for reform to provide a system far superior to that being offered.
One is led to wonder if the sole alternative on offer is designed to encourage a Yes vote as the better of two poor options?
