I was pleased to read the article "Vote No for a better city" (The Argus, August 28) in which Green and Conservative councillors set out reasons why people should resist the proposal for a directly-elected mayor.
It would be a far less democratic and more costly system with no guarantee of improved services.
Although the article correctly mentioned the No campaign had cross-party support, it would be unfortunate if it was not fully recognised there are many Labour party members and supporters, such as myself, who intend to vote No in the forthcoming referendum.
The issue transcends party divisions. A matter of principle is involved.
Public consultation has already indicated a majority want a more democratic, improved committee system that would maximise involvement of a wider range of talents and directly elected representatives.
For the sake of our city, with its need for greater grassroots involvement, let's hope the outcome of the forthcoming referendum will be a resounding No.
