Nigel Donovan, in referring to my concern about BNP leaflets, should know I joined the Labour Party, not New Labour (August 31).

I understand Wish ward has the fastest-growing black and ethnic minority population across Brighton, Hove and Portslade.

Heather James, my colleague ward councillor, and I have worked closely with Gloria Adiba, the founder of the Poets Corner Residents' Society, to proactively enable culturally-diverse communities to be an integral part of the West Hove community.

We even have a community newspaper which goes to thousands of homes and workplaces across this area.

In July, the third annual Poets Corner Festival took place in Stoneham Park.

This provided a variety of cross-cultural entertainment including food, music and dance.

With the recent play equipment and environmental improvements in the park, the surrounding communities have ownership of the park, making it a safer, more pleasant place to live, work and play for all age groups.

There was also the hugely successful multi-cultural evening at the King Alfred, in August, which celebrated the diversity of West Hove people. Heather made an enormous contribution to this taking place.

We cannot afford to be complacent. It is important to remain vigilant.

I believe Heather and I have built up positive relationships with the variety of community groups who need to have their voice effectively heard.

We can continue to do so all the time the electorate give us a mandate.
