Unfriendly, unwelcoming and downright greedy. That is my impression of Brighton from my vain attempts to book family accommodation.
I will be attending a christening on Sunday in East Sussex and, as a former resident of the area, thought it would be nice to revisit Brighton, a place I adored while living in the area.
Unfortunately, it appears while hotels have rooms available, they have a minimum booking of two nights.
Since this was to have been an opportunistic visit rather than a planned weekend break, two nights is not possible for us.
The only hotel I have spoken to that has rooms available for a single night is The Grand.
At a price in excess of £200, this is slightly out of my budget (I would have been prepared to pay up to about £120).
Brighton's hotels appear to be geared up to maximise the profit of the hoteliers rather than to provide travellers with a service.
When I rang the Tourist Information Office, I found more evidence of Brighton's greed - a premium-rate number that cost 50p a minute to talk to someone who, again, was unable to help.
For this charge, I would have hoped the Tourist Office would have had a centralised booking facility.
I like Brighton and would like to visit again. But it appears my stay is too short and nobody wants my money.
On this occasion, I will be going elsewhere through necessity and not choice. On future occasions, I will no longer consider Brighton a place I want to visit.
