Big cuts in city bus services are planned for evening and Sunday services from the end of the month.

Brighton and Hove City Council has been unable to increase its subsidy and West Sussex County Council has cut its support.

Brighton and Hove public transport officer Paul Crowther said: "The changes involve proposals for considerable cuts to a number of services."

Tory councillor Geoffrey Theobald said the cuts followed reductions a year ago and said: "This is a disgrace.

"I am asking for an emergency debate next week at the policy and resources committee.

"The cuts mean many people in areas such as Patcham will have difficulty in making journeys into the city centre."

Proposals include withdrawing most Sunday evening services on the number 2 between Shoreham and Rottingdean.

All Sunday evening services will be axed on the 5A route between Hangleton and Patcham and there will be fewer buses on the 5 and 5B routes.

More Sunday evening services will be cut on the 24 from Churchill Square to Coldean and on the 27 and 27A between Brighton station, Westdene and Hangleton.

The number of journeys on service 81A from Brighton station to Meadowview will also be cut on Sunday evenings.

Almost all evening services on route 46 between Portslade and Southwick and on the coastal route 700 will be withdrawn seven days a week.
