Haywards Heath had no plans to send the spies out today ahead of their big National Cup date.

Heath visit fallen giants Blackheath next Saturday in the first round proper following last week's 50-30 destruction of Thanet Wanderers.

Blackheath, formed way back in 1858 and known simply as The Club, also had a high-scoring affair last week, crashing 58-15 at Penzance and Newlyn.

After spirited efforts in the last two seasons at Newbury and Havant, this could be Heath's best chance yet of turning over higher division opponents.

Skipper Henry Goodburn is not getting carried away by that result.

He said: "I have played down at Penzance myself and I know that it's not a friendly place.

"We produced some very good periods of play last week and, if we can keep that up for 80 minutes, we will have a good chance."

Owen Ashton produced what he rated his best ever kicking performance in slotting ten out ten last week, at least four of them from wide out.

He is among the backs facing extra competition for places after the recent signing of Stuart Charnely.

The former Wasps under-21 player was operating at full back for the IIs in their game at Worthing this week while awaiting clearance to play in the league.

It was a similar story for flanker Alan Maybank, who has joined from Crawley, and back row man Sam Gower, who has been with Westcombe Park and Eastbourne.

Goodburn said: "It is great to have them here getting involved. Stuart has come down to the senior club in Sussex, which makes sense, and Sam and Alan are keen to see how far they can go with us.

"I hope we will be able to involve these players very soon."

Hooker Nick Killick was the main casualty of the opening day.

As well as scoring a fine try and being sin-binned, he also broke a bone in a hand to round off an eventful afternoon.
