One of Brighton's best-known sights has been restored just in time for the conference season.

The famous gold letters on The Grand hotel have been missing for several days after the old sign was taken down.

The replacement lettering was put on the seafront hotel yesterday, in time for the autumn season.

A hotel spokeswoman said: "We are just happy to get it up again and to have the hotel really looking spick and span.

"With the Trades Union Congress conference coming up, we definitely want to be looking our best."

The sign became recognisable all over the world following media coverage of the IRA bomb blast during the Conservative Party's conference in October 1984.

Lettering which identifies the hotel's owners De Vere will be put on the building during a ceremony on September 26.
