Lewes have signed former Albion youngster Neil Winter.

Ironically, Winter arrives from Worthing, the club which has been linked with a swoop for Lewes boss Jimmy Quinn.

Worthing this week denied manager Sammy Donnelly's position was under threat despite speculation that Quinn was on his way to Woodside Road.

Quinn was out of the country this week but assistant-manager Billy Nixon said: There has been no contact between Jimmy and Worthing Football Club about that job.

"At the moment he is very happy to be where he is.

"What he has always said is he will not talk to any club who have got a manager as a matter of principle. If a club have a manager they should not be talking to another manager.

"He is still building a team here, still looking for success and has been backed 100 per cent by the directors of Lewes."

The signing of Winter and moves for two other players, who have not been named, suggest Quinn's mind is still very much focused on events at the Dripping Pan.

Winter was unavailable for today's FA Vase game against Alton Town but should make his debut in the match against Chertsey on Tuesday.

Nixon said: "We are very pleased to sign him. He is a very competitive player.

"In the league we are in none of the teams are friendly. It is a hard league and we have not had anything like an easy game. I think Neil will be a good addition to the squad."

Nixon is delighted with the start Lewes have made to the season following promotion last year.

The squad is gradually getting back to full strength with summer signing Joe Clark back from holiday and Chris Johnson nearing fitness.

Nixon added: "Justin Harris is playing like a man possessed. He is in outstanding form."

Withdean 2000 chairman Mark Stevens has been impressed with the standard of football in the Combined Counties League so far.

Stevens said: "I have watched the County League for the last 15 years and in my opinion every team we have come up against so far would fit into the County League and probably feature in the top half.

"Every team so far seems to play good football. As many of the teams are based around London, they all tend to have players who have been there, done it at a higher level."
