The season may be barely a month old but already the transfer merry-go-round appears to have begun.

A number of managers around Sussex have announced new signings this week while others are hoping to tie up signatures over the weekend.

Selsey were hoping to clinch the signing of Pagham striker Lee Stevens before today's cup game at Oving.

Stevens scored 29 goals for Pagham last season but has hardly figured in their side this year.

Selsey boss Danny Hinshelwood said: "It is a major signing for us. I am always looking to bring in quality players."

Pagham were this week trying to boost their depleted squad with the signing of Gosport Borough's left-sided player Perry Hollands.

A combination of injury, suspension and unavailability has restricted manager Richie Reynolds' options.

Danny Horrill is out with a knee problem, Lee Pinhorne needs a shin operation and Russell Hardwell is expected to be missing for a number of weeks with a ligament injury.

In addition, Ricky Wilson and Kevin Youngs are both serving lengthy suspensions while Ashley Edwards is off to America for three weeks.

Edwards is the subject of a seven-day approach from Chichester, although Reynolds does not expect him to leave.

Eastbourne United have been trying to secure the signings of St Leonards pair Tony Cornelius and Dave Hemman this week on a dual-registration basis.

United are also on the lookout for a goalkeeper following Simon Davey's sudden switch to Littlehampton.

Davey had only joined United in the summer from Eastbourne Borough but failed to settle and jumped at the chance to join the Marigolds.

Sixteen-year-old Josh Priest made his debut for United as they beat Southwick 5-0 on Tuesday but manager Micky French says he does not want to put too much pressure on the youngster.

Hailsham Town have signed midfielder Dave Read from Eastbourne Borough and further new signings could follow.

Mark Leaney's side have suffered four successive defeats but the manager believes he can turn things round.

He said: "We started off very well, winning the first three games, two in the league and one in the cup.

"Then we lost to Pagham and that knocked an awful lot of stuffing out of us and it has taken time to get over that.

"It is a case of rebuilding confidence and get results right. It was always going to be hard and a year of consolidation. We have just got to roll our sleeves up."
