My landlady wants my flat back when the lease is up in November. I am devastated.
The agent told me it was because my 14-year-old daughter had made a noise on two occasions. I have been in the flat for 16 months, always paid my rent on time and looked after the place very well. I love living here.
In January 2000, I had moved into another flat only one month earlier when my landlord said he had to sell because of domestic problems. I am a single mother of one daughter. I work full-time for the Government. My rent is so high I can't save and rely on state benefits to survive. I am not eligible for help from housing associations and the only way Brighton and Hove City Council will help me is if I am evicted and am prepared to live in a bed and breakfast.
I have no money for a deposit because I won't get my deposit back from this flat until I leave it. What can people like me do? We are at the mercy of everyone and have no hope of improving our lives.
My self-esteem is at rock-bottom so it is no wonder my daughter has none either. What kind of country are we living in when people have to live in poverty just to put a roof over their heads and are permanently at the mercy of landlords who have only their own interests at heart?
It's no wonder so many people are living on the streets. Soon there will also be children like mine there, with no prospects for the future.
