All transatlantic flights out of Gatwick remain grounded in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the US.
US air space will stay closed for at least the rest of today and officials at Gatwick are urging passengers to contact airlines before making their journey to the airport.
All of the more than 30 daily flights between Gatwick and the US and Canada have been cancelled, affecting about 7,000 passengers.
Non-transatlantic flights are still running but are subject to delays due to the extra security measures in place. Passengers are advised to allow more time for boarding flights.
The disruption to services is likely to continue for some time.
A spokeswoman for UK airport operators BBA said that even when US air space does reopen, conditions would still be far from normal.
She said: "Increases in security, more searches and a stronger police presence at airports - that is what a passenger can expect."
