I watched the events of September 11 in the US live on television and was appalled by the horrific loss of innocent lives.
The scenes of some Palestinians celebrating were disturbing but, in context, understandable. For them, state-sponsored terrorism is a fact of daily life. Retaliation against the power that supports their oppression is justifiable in their eyes.
Equally, Americans will justify whatever military action is taken by their government. And there will be scenes of celebration.
It is ironic that Colin Powell described this as an attack on democracy. The US government has shown contempt for democracy on the world stage.
Even Adam Trimingham invoked the D-word (The Argus, September 13). Has he forgotten the leader of the most powerful nation on earth wasn't actually elected?
Terrorism is anti-democratic, whoever the perpetrator. As in all conflicts, the way forward is through dialogue.
