An amateur Sussex football team have dedicated their win last weekend to a close friend of the side who died two weeks ago.

L&S Athletic held a minute's silence before their home game against BTR Brakes last weekend and Athletic's players all wore black armbands for the occasion.

The gesture was in memory of 17-year-old Ryan Doubtfire who went to school with most of the players at Boundstone Community College in Lancing.

L&S won the Worthing & District League match 4-1 and afterwards goalkeeper Paul Moynam explained the decision to pay tribute to Ryan.

He said: "Myself and most of the other lads went to school with Ryan and it was just the normal thing to do out of respect. Ryan was in a lot of my classes and all the guys who knew him are distraught. He was someone we saw out and about, and someone who we would have a drink with.

"We would like to dedicate our win to him and the fact we were playing for Ryan definitely made us try harder."

Geoff Garland, Ryan's head of house at Boundstone College, confessed the school was in a state of shock.

He said: "The team's gesture was their way of remembering Ryan, I am sure the family will have appreciated it. There are tragic circumstances relating to his death. The school was devastated when we heard the news, it happened on the first day back and left us in a state of disbelief."

Ryan was found dead at his home address on September 3. His death has been referred to the coroner. Police have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
