Old Brightonians opened their 75th anniversary season with a 48-22 success at Shoreham in the Junior Cup.
Steve Humphries stole the show with four tries. Mark Dodd (2), Dan Heal and Saul Green also got across with Green slotting four conversions.
John Chapman (2), Matt Krelle and Gary Locker replied for Shoreham. Martin Chatfield kicked a conversion.
Burgess Hill were taken the distance by Wingspan in an excellent tie before winning 17-10 in extra-time.
Jon Maple and Simon Perry crossed for Hill in the first half as they attacked down the slope but impressive Wingspan hooker Melvin Palmer pulled one back just before the interval.
Jeff Satterly rounded off a spell of pressure to level matters before Maple added goal points to Stuart Holt's decisive strike in the extra 20 minutes.
Midhurst are off to a great start under the new captaincy of outside half Phil Luxton. Tries from veteran flanker Gus Ford (2) and student fullback Andy Morrison clinched a 17-0 success at Brockenhurst.
Newick went down 35-17 at Old Freemans and Barns Green bowed out at Chipstead.
Ditchling were handed a walkover.
Sevsral Sussex clubs were barred from entering the junior event by the RFU after withdrawing from last season's competition.
The Sussex RFU urged teams not to make the same mistake this time and the message was heeded with all the county's representatives fulfilling their fixtures.
