For the first time in three years, there will be a year-round ferry service from Newhaven to Dieppe.
During the autumn and winter the Sardinia Vera ferry will undertake the crossing daily, replacing the high-speed summer catamaran.
Unlike the catamaran, the ferry will sail in almost all weathers and is also capable of taking freight lorries.
If the operators can only make the service more attractive and popular, they might be able to put a second ferry on the route.
