Few people can have remained unmoved by the singing of The Star Spangled Banner at the Changing of the Guard last week. I cannot imagine God Save The Queen, with its dreary tune and words that many, including myself, would find impossible to utter, giving the same comfort and inspiration to the British people at a time of national disaster.
Several possible alternatives have been suggested in the past. Jerusalem now appears to be out of favour but what about I Vow To Thee, My Country, for example?
It is high time we had an anthem which is truly national, rather than royalist.
