I hope Great Britain has an early opportunity to demonstrate to the global Muslim community that it is even-handed in its international relations by involving itself with the international community in bringing a speedy settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Britain must take the position that Israel's policy of Jewish settlement of the occupied territories must cease and be reversed. The way should then be clear for an agreement giving land, security and self-government to the Palestinians in return for security of Israel's borders enforced by international treaty.

There must be an obligation on the Palestinians to ensure terrorist groups do not operate from their territories - an obligation, to date, they have clearly failed on.

Israel's settlement of the occupied territories is wrong and the international community has failed to make the point strongly enough. We have been giving the Muslim world cause for complaint and provided the basis on which extremists attempt to justify their actions. May God help us through the weeks ahead. I fear we are in for a very rough ride.
