A final attempt is being made to stop dozens of bus services in West Sussex being axed.

Worthing Lib Dem councillor Nick Rodgers says buses are a key way of removing cars from congested roads.

He has asked for the issue of support for services to be investigated by one of the new select committees set up at County Hall under the Cabinet system.

He is hoping it will save routes and lift threats to others.

Coun Rodgers said: "We spend a lot of money on traffic calming and other schemes to reduce accidents, which is fine, but you also need to reduce the volume of traffic on the road.

"This decision will decimate services at a time when we have got to get people out of their cars and on to buses. In some areas there will be no services at all on Sundays."

West Sussex County Council spends £1.4 million a year subsidising loss-making routes where commercial operators will not run buses.

A large number of services will be shed in October and November in an attempt to claw back a predicted overspend of £570,000 by the end of the financial year.

A points system to decide which services to support in future may lead to further cuts.

Among the latest services which Cabinet member Coun Tex Pemberton has approved for the axe are the 108 and 109 weekly shopping service between Shoreham and Horsham and the 289 Friday service for shoppers operating between Small Dole and Brighton.

The Chichester region will lose several village buses, leaving some areas with no service.
