I felt uneasy when reading the contribution of B Bayliss (Letters, September 26). There are already funds for the victims of September 11 being established and contributed to all over the world by practically all sections of humanity. They are sending a message of shared mourning, anger, compassion and determination, irrespective of race or creed, to create a more stable globe.
Having Muslim nations solely and forcibly contribute to a UN fund would, conversely, risk many global misunderstandings. It would risk creating the impression that all Islam rather than a minority of Islamist misfits is being blamed by a Christian West for this evil. It risks creating the horrible impression that this same West doesn't trust Muslims to show compassion and generosity of their own accord.
Far, then, from making the Islamist "ask himself if the action was worth it", we would succeed ultimately only in reinforcing his determination to carry out more such barbarities in the future.
