Eastbourne fans have given massive backing to promoter Jon Cook's call for a new-look Elite League.

Eighty-three per cent voted in favour of weekly speedway at Arlington, while only 17 per cent said they preferred to see the Grand Prix stars.

Cook's reaction: "It shows we are on the right track so far as our supporters are concerned.

"We will continue to push for regular meetings and a limit on the number of Grand Prix riders in the league."

Eastbourne are calling for teams to be restricted to one Grand Prix rider for the next two years and none in 2004.

The second question in last week's survey was less conclusive.

Thirty-nine per cent of fans voted for Friday night meetings next season on Grand Prix weekends, 33 per cent for Saturday afternoon and 28 per cent for Saturday evening.

Said Cook: "Friday night meetings might be a problem because we would have to reach an agreement with Oxford and Peterborough, who already race on Fridays."

Some supporters gave Sunday as an alternative, but Cook confirmed: "That is not an option because of the Polish League."

DAVE ABBOTT had three wins out of three as an Eastbourne team beat a Hastings side 20-15 in the Arlington vintage challenge.

The enthusiasts riding old JAP machines provided spectators will plenty of enjoyment.

Former Southampton and Wimbledon rider Jack Vallis at the age of 70 was the oldest rider in action.
