Hastings Town, from the Dr Martens eastern division crashed out of the FA Cup, losing 2-0 at home to Newport IoW.

Two first-half goals from premier outfit Newport were enough to seal Town's fate.

Town coach Terry White said: "Despite what people think, it a big jump between the premier and eastern divisions. For the first 20 minutes they were probably better than us and as the home team we did not control the game.

"From a financial point of view it was important but the most important game is next Friday when we play Dorchester in the league because we were never going to win the FA Cup but we could win the league."

Chris Honey had Town's first chance, forcing Colin Matthews into a brave save.

Town goalkeeper Dave King pulled off an excellent stop to deny Dave Wakefield before Gibbons latched onto a mistake by Tommy Osborne and opened the scoring on 29 minutes.

The visitors doubled their lead just before half-time when Ian Rew powered home a free kick.

As the players returned to the centre circle, Town forward Lee McRobert was shown a red card for foul and abusive language.

Hastings gave a spirited display in the second half and Danny Simmonds went close.

The visitors were also reduced to ten men late on when Adam Holbrook was sent-off for the second of two yellow cards.
