I was disappointed to see Voice Of The Argus (September 25) describing the alternative to a directly-elected mayor as "the tired old committee system".

As your leader-writer well knows, what will be on the ballot paper will be "an improved committee system" - improving on the democracy we've already got, not abandoning it for an all-powerful individual.

The use of such emotive terms is a sure sign of someone wishing to denigrate an idea but lacking any cogent argument with which to do so.
