Electrical retailer Hills Sound and Vision, of Station Road, Portslade, has been appointed as one of only five JVC Centres of Retail Excellence in the UK.
The family business was founded in Hove in 1934, by brothers Frederick and Arthur Hill, as a provider of rechargeable batteries for radios at a time when most homes did not have an electricity supply.
As more properties were connected to the power supply, Hills expanded its range to include domestic appliances and an on-site workshop repair service.
Business boomed and, in 1997, it doubled in size when it took over the empty property next door.
A company spokesman said: "This recognition by JVC is directly attributed to the staff's dedication to product learning, which ensures our customers receive impartial and exceptionally valuable advice."
