As a formerly undecided local voter, I was impressed by the recent rally organised by the Allies For Democracy, which is campaigning for a No vote in the mayoral referendum.
Two things struck me about the meeting. First, the breadth of different opinions represented in the No campaign is very encouraging, from Tories to Greens. Many Labour councillors were present too.
It is good to see political opponents prepared to work together in the best interests of our city.
Secondly, I learned a No vote will not be a vote for the status quo but for an improved and streamlined committee system, which will be far better than the undemocratic cabinet system we now have in Brighton and Hove.
I have decided to vote No to a city mayor because that is clearly the best way to vote for a more open, democratic and responsive local council to take our city forward.
