I congratulate The Argus (September 27) on the excellent, well-informed article that stressed all our communities in Brighton and Hove, including the Muslim community, were outraged and deeply distressed at the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York on September 11.
Our Muslim leaders pointed out that there was no justification under Islam for this terrorist action.
Articles such as this make an important contribution to perceptions and understanding in our city and it is important for people to know that no faith justifies such attacks.
Brighton and Hove City Council recognises the value of a strong and diverse community and is committed to implementing its equalities policy.
The current Celebrating Diversity Campaign has highlighted how diversity strengthens and enriches our city.
However, it is important to remember peace and harmony are not automatic.
They have to be worked for continually, particularly in difficult times.
The Press plays an important role in promoting peace and harmony in the community.
This is one of the most valuable assets we have. We all need to work together to treasure and protect it.
-Coun Juliet McCaffery, Lead Councillor, Equalities and Social Justice, Brighton and Hove City Council
