Gatwick was at the centre of a security scare after potentially lethal items were smuggled on to a flight just weeks after the New York attacks.
The Government said it was reviewing security after claims by a Sunday newspaper that an undercover reporter smuggled a 9in knife, a 12in knitting needle and a metal nail file on board a British Airways flight from Gatwick to Orlando.
The journalist also smuggled scissors and tweezers on to an Air France flight from Heathrow to Miami.
A spokesman for the Department of Transport said: "We are taking such reports seriously. We are in touch with those companies concerned."
