Caretaker Phillip Gray is known and liked in The Lanes area of Brighton.

Now he is fighting for his life after being viciously attacked last week.

Mr Gray was a friendly fellow who greeted most people with a smile and a few words.

He was repaid for that kindness by being bludgeoned on the head.

Although The Lanes is much quieter in the early morning than at other times of the day, someone must have seen this attack.

That person has a duty to tell the police so the offender can be taken off the streets.
