A man was shot in both legs in broad daylight today.
The man, who has not been named, was shot twice in the legs at about 11.45am.
The victim, thought to be in his late 30s, has been taken from the scene of the shooting, in Southwick, to Worthing Hospital.
Police cordoned off the area and scenes of crime officers were investigating.
One passer-by said: "I heard two shots and then someone screamed."
The person, who did not want to be named, said the incident had shocked the usually quiet residential area.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "As a result of the incident a man has been taken to hospital with injuries.
"We are investigating the matter and cannot comment further at this stage."
A spokeswoman for Sussex Ambulance Service said: "At 11.48am we received a call saying a male had been shot in his legs.
"The shooting took place at the junction of Mile Oak Road and Southwick Steet."
Police sealed off the top end of Southwick Street and secured telephone boxes on either side of Old Shoreham Road.
