A spate of bag snatches has prompted police to warn women to keep an eye on their handbags.
Over the weekend there were at least three bag snatches in the Eastbourne area. In one case a bag containing £200 cash was taken.
Chief Inspector Grenville Wilson said: "Our officers are only too aware of the recent number of attacks and thefts which have seen handbags taken from women.
"These offences are clearly not being committed by one individual and are most likely to be in complete isolation of each other.
"A considerable amount of policing effort and resource has and will continue to be committed to prevent and arrest those responsible for these offences."
Chief Insp Wilson appealed to members of the public to help police tackle the problem.
He urged: "If you see anyone acting suspiciously around shopping precincts or inside stores please tell the shopkeeper and police.
"Women in particular should ensure they keep a tight grip of their handbags and only carry money or valuables if it is absolutely necessary."
Anyone who can offer information which will help police stamp out such thefts should contact Crimestoppers anonymously and in confidence on 0800 555111 or police in East Downs division on 0845 6070999.
