A society which makes fireworks celebrations go with a bang today urged people not to wreck the giant bonfire it is to build.
Controlled dumping of rubbish is allowed when the stack starts to take shape at Littlehampton.
The town's Bonfire Society urged people to be sensible or risk losing the spectacle of the bonfire.
Secretary Richard Cooper said members have permission to start building the bonfire at the East Green car park on October 22.
He said: "Anyone dumping rubbish on the site before then will be acting illegally and could face prosecution and only non-toxic combustible items, such as wood and garden waste may be deposited.
"We cannot accept polystyrene foam, aerosols, containers of any liquids, beds, sofas, armchairs or carpets."
The bonfire will form the centrepiece of the celebration on October 27.
The society is hoping for good weather because its procession through the town has been cancelled for the past three years by torrential rain and high winds.
