A man has been arrested in connection with a shooting at Southwick on Tuesday.
Armed police swooped on an address in Southwick early today and took a man in his 30s away for questioning.
Detectives stressed the man had been arrested as part of the inquiry into the shooting, codenamed Operation Cavendish, and had not been charged.
The victim was shot through both legs near the underpass at the junction of Old Shoreham Road and Southwick Street just before noon on Tuesday.
He is now under police guard at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.
Detective Inspector Graham Pratt of Hove police said: "He is not in a critical condition but he is very uncomfortable."
The gun has not been found.
Anyone with information should call Hove CID on 0845 6070999.
Mr Pratt said: "We are still following up a number of inquiries and sightings of people in the area, but we would like more people to come forward as there were quite a few people and motorists in the area at the time."
