A man arrested in connection with a shooting has been released on police bail.
The victim, who has not been named, was shot in both legs in an underpass near Southwick Street and Old Shoreham Road, Southwick, on Tuesday morning.
People living nearby found him in agony in a pool of blood after hearing his screams.
He is under police guard at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he was in a stable condition today.
Detective Inspector Graham Pratt is leading the investigation.
He said: "I can confirm that the man arrested yesterday has been released on police bail.
"The gun used in the shooting has not yet been recovered.
"One of our main priorities is to find the weapon, if it has been dumped somewhere, so that we can get it off the streets."
