Heath are loving life in the big league

A late try sentenced Heath to their first defeat since promotion to London One at Basingstoke last weekend.

But Goodburn is delighted with the way his team have acquitted themselves so far.

"We are improving game by game and the faster pace in this league suits our style," he said.

"Last season we had a couple of matches like that, but now it's the same every week and the lads really enjoy it.

"The game is still as physical, but whereas we used to have maybe 12 opportunities in a game last season we now have six and it means you have to take them."

Heath face perhaps their toughest task so far when they make the long trip to Norwich next weekend, but they should be back to something like full strength.

Nick Killick is close to a return after breaking his hand while Vince Rolandi, who had to pull out of the Basingstoke game after tearing his calf in the warm-up, is also on the mend and was in contention for this afternoon's friendly at Staines.

Goodburn reckons brother Giles, who injured his knee in pre-season, should be back in a month.

In the meantime the skipper is delighted with the contribution of the players who have come in from the second team.

"Both the seconds and thirds are doing really well and I think that's an indication of our strength in depth," he added.

Brighton could have a new face in their side when league action resumes at East Grinstead next week.

Coach Bert Meritt says the club are 'working on a few things' and might be able to strengthen their ranks in time for the trip to Saint Hill.

Merritt believes his side should be judged once they have got all their players back. Danie Venter should return next week after a work trip overseas and Mark Gibb's suspension will be over by the end of the month.

"There was a big improvement defensively last week but we have got to learn to take our opportunities," said Merritt. "When things do gel we will get a lot better."
