I read with horror of the intention to move the Nigel Porter Unit from the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton to the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.
Three years ago, I needed treatment and care from the unit. It was excellent and I recovered well.
Part of the reason for the excellence is the staff who work there. Everyone from the surgeons and nurses to the clerical staff is kind and considerate and knows the job well.
If the unit was to move, a lot of these staff would most likely have to leave because they would be unable to travel the distance to Haywards Heath in the time allowed each day.
Elderly and ill people, who may not have private transport easily available to them, would have great difficulty in travelling on public transport, which takes four hours each way.
I am writing to the Chief Executive of the West Sussex Health Authority to urge him most strongly to leave the unit in Brighton - or even in Hove - thus allowing its excellent work to continue.
