Bulldozers have been sent in again to protect homes and a caravan park from flooding.
The operation has been mounted in the Medmerry Beach area of Selsey, near Chichester, where the only protection from the sea is a shingle bank.
The bulldozers have become a frequent sight in recent winters during severe tidal conditions.
The Environment Agency says residents should be prepared for the possibility of flooding, with more high tides and heavy winds predicted later today.
Sussex area manager Peter Midgley said the decision to send in bulldozers followed extensive damage to the shingle bank.
He said: "The tide has pounded the defences and the height of the bank has been reduced by 1.5 metres along a 70-metre stretch."
The agency said the bank stood up overnight but four bulldozers would remain in the area as the next high tide approached.
