East Grinstead boss Bob Smith guided his side into fourth place in County League division two, but admitted they were fortunate to beat Eastbourne Town.

Young substitute Dave Garrett grabbed an 89th minute winner to secure a thrilling 3-2 win at East Court.

The Wasps had raced into a 2-0 lead, somewhat against the run of play, thanks to Steve Greig's 18th minute penalty - his fifth goal in three games - after Mike Watkins had tripped Dave Gellatly and Matt Thorpe's low shot 11 minutes later.

Watkins reduced the deficit just before half time and the visitors drew level midway through the second half through Gary Brockwell but Grinstead snatched maximum points when Thorpe unselfishly squared the ball to Garrett who hammered a low shot into the bottom corner from close range.

Boss Bob Smith said: "We were perhaps a shade fortunate to win but when they got it back to 2-2 we had a really good spell and finished strongly.

"The pitch was heavy and we didn't play the football I wanted us too, but the workrate was excellent and I thought we did a lot better defensively. They were one of the best sides we've played this season, I was really impressed with the way they knocked the ball around."

Warren Levy struck twice as Shoreham extended their lead at the top to ten points with a 2-1 win over Storrington.

Having struck eight goals the previous week, Shoreham may have been hoping for another hatful against a side second from bottom in the division.

But Storrington gave a good account of themselves and Shoreham boss Roger Brace admitted his side were a little fortunate to take maximum points.

Brace said: "I am pleased to keep the run going but it wasn't a good game. It was probably our poorest performance for some weeks, if not for the season.

"I always knew, with Bob Paine in charge, Storrington would give us a good game. As pleased as I am to get the points, I think Storrington were unlucky to go away losing 2-1."

Levy put Shoreham ahead on four minutes but the visitors levelled 11 minutes later thanks to an own goal from Rob Craven.

The issue was decided midway through the second half by a contentious penalty following a foul on Chris Pulling. Levy converted from the spot for his 11th goal of the season.

East Preston returned to winning ways with a 4-1 success away to Wealden. Matt Huckett and David Walker each scored twice to the delight of manager Vic Short.

Short said: "It was nice because we have had a lean spell. We played as well as we have done for five or six weeks.

"I am pleased because it would have been easy to change the side and get some older players in. But we stuck with the youngsters and they did well.

"We always knew it would take a couple of years here. But if we could still be in the top seven come January or February, you never know."

Andy Payne hit the lone reply for Wealden.

Paul Gallagher hit a second half hat-trick as Broadbridge Heath won 4-0 at home to an inconsistent Mile Oak side, who had hammered second placed Oakwood 5-0 the week before. Marcus Cooke had put Heath ahead just before half time.

After eight games without a win, Seaford were delighted with a 2-0 success at home to rock bottom Bosham.

Steve Loughton finally broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when he converted Allan Ashdown's cross and John Snelgrove sealed victory 19 minutes from time after being set up by debutant Simon Halsey, who had been signed from Newhaven.

Andy Durrant scored the only goal in the 55th minute as Oving beat Crawley Down.

Recent signing Phil Smith grabbed a 76th minute winner as Withdean won 3-2 at Walton Casuals in the Combined Counties League.

Roy Pook twice gave Withdean the lead only for the hosts to claw their way back into the game but Smith decided the issue 14 minutes from time.

Withdean gave debuts to Anthony Allen and former Horsham midfielder Cliff Thomas but it was Pook who impressive manager Mark Stevens. He said: "Roy Pook was outstanding and man-of-the-match without a doubt."
