A fisherman who has been delaying a multi-million pound homes and leisure scheme has ended his battle.
Clive Mills has moved his boat and equipment off the Norfolk Wharf at Littlehampton after peace talks with Arun District Council.
The way is now clear for the site on the town's East Bank to be redeveloped.
Mr Mills lost two High Court claims that he had a long-established right to stay at the wharf and said last week he said he would rather face jail than give up.
But now he says he will move after all, following an agreement with the council which he says will protect the rights of the port's commercial fishermen.
Mr Mills said he was helped in the talks by Peter Somers, a skilled negotiator whose wife Sarah is chairman of the River Arun User Group.
He said: "Our proposal was I would move my boat and all my fishing gear off Norfolk Quay if I could be found a suitable mooring and that serious consideration could be given for the future of Littlehampton's commercial fishermen.
"This was agreed and I've undertaken not to return to any land in council ownership without specific prior approval."
Mr Somers said: "I know Clive feels he may have let some people down by not continuing his occupation of the Wharf, but he has made his decision with knowledge that there is a way forward."
