As a result of Carrie Buckle's somewhat ecstatic review of the restaurant The King And I (The Argus, July 11), my wife and I went there recently for a special celebration.
In my many years in Brighton, I have eaten with pleasure at our several Thai restaurants and at Thai restaurants in London, Paris, the US and the Far East. The King And I is by far the worst I have encountered.
Specifically, the diced pork was so tough as to be inedible and the noodles beggar description. They were a soggy, glutinous lump that, when one tried to serve a portion, hung from the fork like a wet dishcloth.
But that's not all. When I called the manager to point out the toughness of the pork and the glutinous mass that was the noodles, he simply said: "Oh, really?" and walked away.
What I should remind him is that people such as I often have a wide circle of friends who love eating out and share our opinions.
Warnford Wilson, Braemore Road, Hove
-* Mrs W Tuff, proprietor of The King And I, Ship Street, Brighton, replies: Mr Wilson and his wife were at our restaurant on Friday, October 19, and had five dishes. Had he told us of his complaint at the time we would have served an alternative to him or deducted the cost from his bill. We try to please all our customers all the time and I am sorry Mr Wilson was disappointed with some of his main course. Our restaurant is always busy. We attract many famous names. During the Labour Party conference, Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, wrote: "Excellent meal - my heartiest congratulations". This is a more typical response than that of Mr Wilson.
