Detectives hunting the brutal attackers of Brighton caretaker Philip Gray today took to the streets to talk to the public.
Four weeks after the attack Mr Gray, 54, has now been moved from intensive care on to a ward at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, but is still in a dangerously ill condition.
He has remained unconscious since suffering a fractured skull when he was beaten about the head with his own broom in Brighton Square at 7am on October 1.
He staggered to the front of the Druid's Head pub, where he was found in a pool of blood.
Mr Gray has had a chest infection for the past week and, although he showed signs of recovery last week, doctors do not know when he will regain consciousness.
His wife Margaret, 53, is constantly by his hospital bed.
Officers were today talking to people who could have been in the area between 6.15am and 7.15am when the assault happened.
Meanwhile, colleagues in the police HQ CCTV suite were monitoring the bank of cameras which cover the area, comparing today's activity with the people and vehicles on the CCTV footage taken four weeks ago.
Detective Inspector Fiona Grant, who is leading Operation Ignition, said: "I'm convinced someone saw the offender or offenders leaving the area. We are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact us."
A £15,000 reward from Sussex Police and The Lanes Traders' Association has been offered to anyone with information leading to a successful conviction.
