I read the account of Digna Ochoa's vicious killing last Friday in Mexico City and I felt great pride in my sex.

Ms Ochoa was a lawyer and a human-rights activist and was 38 years of age. In the midst of all the mayhem present in this sad world, her sacrifice lit a candle.

In spite of fleeing the country after a series of threats, she returned to Mexico City to continue her fight for justice on behalf of two peasant environmentalists who were jailed on false charges and, prior to that, had defended Zapatistas sympthasisers.

The authorities were blamed for Ms Ochoa's murder for not taking the threats seriously against the activists. There were other cases taken up by this brave lawyer prior to her death.

Would it be too much to ask that clergy throughout the diocese to dedicate the hymn Once To Every Man And Nation Comes A Moment To Decide in her memory?

We all meet the moment when we have to stand up and be counted but, fortunately, not on the same level as that brave lady who knew that selective justice is defective justice.

Let the people of Mexico City know we have honoured her.
