Whitehawk went 4-0 up in 21 minutes but still dropped two precious home points.
Hawks had defender Stuart Edwards sent-off on his debut and were held to a 4-4 home draw by Selsey after a dramatic second half.
It was the third time in eight days Hawks had hit four goals at home and boss Ian Chapman joked: "We're trying to bring the crowds back.
"We scored some great goals but it was disappointing in the end. If we had kept 11 men on the pitch we would have won the game.
Simon Rowland struck twice with Jason Allen and Ollie Rowland also on target but Edwards was shown red for alleged stamping.
Chapman said: "Stuart was very disappointed. He said he didn't even know their player was there."
The two goal happy sides are both managed by former Albion defenders.
Selsey's Danny Hinshelwood saw John Bines hit the post with a penalty just before the break and admitted: "I thought then it would be one of those nights."
Mark Hinshelwood, Derek Chester, Ian Ford and Barry Rishman struck as Selsey attacked down the slope and they had chances to win it in the closing minutes.
Hassocks climbed off the foot of the first division with a 1-0 win at Wick. Jamie Graham scrambled their late winner and boss Dave John said: "We battled well."
It was the Robins' first clean sheet since the first day of the season.
Pagham had a welcome 3-2 home win over Horsham YMCA.
