more good news today, this time over abandoned cars which are causing problems in every Sussex town.
The Government will give councils new powers to remove wrecks quickly, sometimes within 24 hours.
Abandoned cars look unsightly and block parking spaces. Worse still, they can become little bombs, causing injury to youngsters who destroy them or set them on fire. These vehicles rival bikes ridden on pavements and dogs' mess as one of the main sources of complaints to councils.
But under current laws it is hard for councils to act quickly and sometimes there is a muddle over whether they or the police are responsible.
The new regulations announced by Transport Secretary Stephen Byers put the onus firmly on councils to act and the power to do it swiftly. Let's hope they do it.
