Following on from the hugely-popular series of FIFA football games, this 2002 version has everything fans have come to expect in top-flight computer football.
As in previous versions, the PlayStation 2 graphics are very impressive but Electronic Arts have overhauled the game to make playing your way to glory a more satisfying experience.
A new passing system puts an end to pinpoint passing at the touch of a button but makes it easier to spray the ball around the field, play through balls and combine for neat one-twos - something I haven't quite managed yet.
There's also a new tackling model, where the timing and angle of your tackles means the difference between winning the ball and getting your marching orders from the referee.
The computer player is a formidable foe, probing for your team's weaknesses when it attacks and staying on its feet to defend solidly.
Even the referees have improved their game, justifiably handing out more cards for the sort of vicious and cynical tackles my teams specialise in.
All this means you have to think about how you're playing. You can't just rush down the wing and pop the ball in the net and you can't lunge into every tackle. The great thing is the game encourages creative play and, although weighting passes takes some getting used to, the new system quickly becomes enjoyable for players of all levels.
With 16 national leagues, and more than 450 teams including 125 international sides, the game offers a good chance to field your favourite side.
The Seagulls don't feature but fans can easily recreate the team and players and pit Bobby Zamora and the lads against the cream of world football.
You can kick-off straight away by playing a friendly, challenge yourself over a season, enter a knockout tournament or even tackle the World Cup.
All this takes place to a soundtrack which includes a song from our native Gorillaz and a number of club tunes.
The in-game commentary from John Motson and Andy Gray is accurate and amusing but does become repetitive after a few games, especially when they're always so critical.
With better gameplay, more options and lots of scope for customisation, FIFA Football 2002 is sure to please any fan this season.
It is more than a stroll in the park and ideal for gamers wanting to play the beautiful game. A strong title contender.
