I am sure we are all grateful to David Gold (Letters, November 12) for his reassurance that the House of Commons is in London.

However, most of the 50 or more constituents a day who write to me prefer to do so at my constituency office, John Saunders House, 179 Preston Road, Brighton BN1 6AG.

Many of them and of the constituents who come to my advice sessions at Old Boat and Brighthelm community centres and who talk to me at my weekly roving surgeries in different parts of the constituency are concerned about those issues that have an effect on their everyday lives.

But Mr Gold shows lack of understanding of the people of Brighton and Hove if he does not realise residents are also concerned about those national and international issues on which decisions are taken in Parliament.

I am delighted our newly-elected Member of Parliament for Bexhill and Battle constituency is proving to be so active at Westminster.

In the past week alone, he has asked numerous oral and written questions. However, the topics are slightly puzzling: Assistance for people living in the flood-prone areas of Wales, a request for a resumption of fox hunting and pressure to combat organised crime in Russia.

It is nice to see a politician with a well-rounded sense of national and international issues but I wonder how they affect the majority of the electorate in his constituency?

Is there a particular Shadow portfolio that is catching his attention? Let's face it, there are so few Tories willing to be seen on the opposition front bench with Iain Duncan Smith he stands a good chance of success.
