New city refuse manager Steve White knows the problems faced daily by dustmen in Brighton and Hove.
He has spent the last week going out on rounds with the binmen and their colleagues who keep the streets tidy.
It is part of the effort Brighton and Hove City Council has made to improve the service since it took over from private contractors a month ago.
Although there are still problems, complaints have dropped and most people think the service has improved.
It is vital for the council to get the workforce on its side instead of fighting a war of attrition with them, as appeared to happen with the last management.
Keeping Brighton and Hove's streets clean is a difficult and sometimes dangerous job as Mr White now knows all too well.
It can only be achieved by the men and managers working together.
