Christmas shoppers have been warned to be on their guard when using cash dispensers.
Fraudsters are using card-reading devices to obtain security details and steal cash.
Police in Lewes said more than £1,000 had disappeared from two accounts using this method in the last week.
Both incidents happened in High Street. The offenders use a device which is attached to the machine's card slot.
When a customer places their card in the device they find it is unreadable.
A notice stuck to the machine prompts them to re-enter their PIN.
A fraudster, posing as a queuing customer, notes the number. The device then swallows the card which is later recovered by offenders.
PC Andy Kidd of Lewes police said: "We urge people to be aware of those standing in cashpoint queues and also to shred or burn old credit card receipts to stop information falling into the wrong hands."
