A scheme aimed at transforming East Grinstead town centre to boost trade and tourism has been unveiled.
The package of measures follows public consultation and will cost an estimated £804,000.
The project includes a new 20mph traffic zone, extra bus stops and new shelters, an area for a street market, landscaping, new street furniture and pavement widening.
A report says: "Through improving the attractiveness of the environment of the town centre it is hoped to maintain and increase the number of shopping and tourist visits to the benefit of the local economy."
The scheme will be based around the High Street, London Road, West Street and Railway Approach and councillors have been told it has been given strong public support.
The package also includes improved street lighting in the town centre which the county council says should help reduce crime and disorder.
Road safety has also been a key factor in drawing up the scheme by making walking and cycling more appealing together with increased use of buses.
Mid Sussex District Council is to meet £320,000 of the cost, with another £30,000 from East Grinstead Town Council.
Unless there are objections, it is expected the scheme will go ahead during the next financial year.
