I am delighted the earth mound in Wild Park, ostensibly created to deter travellers, has now been removed by Brighton and Hove City Council (The Argus, December 22).
However, surely it has occurred even to the simplest soul that no matter whether earth mounds, wooden poles or even trenches are installed in this area, travellers will still be able to enter the park by the perfectly adequate metalled road leading from the A270 Lewes Road as, indeed, has happened in the past.
It also seems strangely out of character for the Council to be pro-active with regard to travellers.
Usually, any measures taken are after an invasion, and, subsequently, thousands of pounds are spent clearing up.
There must be another explanation. I have heard it suggested the Parks Department has a budget surplus to use up to avoid a reduced allocation of funds next year.
If so, the £5,000 spent creating and removing the mound will merely have served to contribute to this goal, whatever irrelevant explanation has been given.
Watch out for similar good works elsewhere.
