The Christmas Eve article in The Argus about Sussex cricketer Rupert Whatley brought back many happy memories of summers of long ago.
He was then known as Rupert Webb. Presumably he adopted a stage name after he retired from cricket. I can see him now taking three brilliant catches in the Gillette Cup final, including the dismissal of Jack Hobbs, back in 1960.
Although the article described him as internationally successful, sadly he only made three appearances for England - but at least he had the satisfaction of running out Don Bradman at Lords in 1956.
