I write to support Billy Dann (Letters, January 5).
I and many others worked tirelessly with little notice to advise all those local to the Preston Barracks site there would be a consultation about proposals for the site because those holding the meeting did not make an effort to.
Obviously, if people did not know, they could not listen to the proposals and therefore would have no opinion on the development and could voice no opposition.
When I challenged proposals to create hi-tech employment rather than desperately needed local amenities in this heavily populated area (because there are none), I was told: "Just because you live here you have no automatic right to anything put on this land."
Don't be fooled, a hi-tech office development does not mean work for local people because most of these jobs will be filled by out-of-towners - the only ones who have the qualifications and money to afford such offices.
We were told a community facility would be considered but the second draft shows nothing of the sort.
There is a second meeting being held by several local tenant and community associations to make sure we are not ignored on this matter.
I have lived here all my life and will not be told by a jumped-up London-based consultant I have no right to my opinion, especially since these consultants have no idea of the damage their ideas may do to the area if local people are not consulted.
Please, all locals, come to the meeting being held at the United Reformed Church tomorrow at 7pm (bottom of the road to B&Q).
Don't sit indoors and complain after the event - it is important for us all to have a say.
